I remember seeing a film where a detective was blamed for a murder as his fellow detective who helped him set up a ‘murder’ was killed when his car crashed, destroying the evidence of the ‘set up’-e.g. photographic negatives of the ‘fake’ murder.
Does anyone remember the film and it’s title.
I think Dana Andrews starred in it.

I believe you are thinking of “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt” directed by Fritz Lang. Although the star, Dana Andrews was a writer. SIdney Blackmer plays the newspaper publsher who has all of the evidence, but he is killed in a car crash.
