German Expressionism: New DVD Collection

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Kino has released a 4-DVD box set titled German Expressionism Collection, which includes four silent classics from the period of German expressionism, which some film scholars consider is the genesis of the dark shadowy look of film noir.

The four titles are:

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) Directed by Robert Wiene
Warning Shadows (1923) Directed by Arthur Robison
The Hands of Orlac (1924) Directed by Robert Wiene
Secrets of a Soul (1926) Directed by G.W. Pabst

  1. Hi!Tony D’Ambra,

According to the article that you posted…
…”Some film scholars consider it (German Expressionism) the genesis of the dark shadowy look of film noir.”
Well…I have linked an article that may explain why some film scholars consider German Expressionism
the genesis of film noir. I most definitely, agree with the film scholars, who consider German Expressionism the “beginning” of the “look” of this “thing” called film noir.
(I am almost ashamed to admit that the German Expressionist boxset is still sitting in my Amazon.com shopping cart.)
    dcd 😉

  2. Tony, this looks to be a great set, although as you know CABINET has been out on a few labels including by Kino themselves. WARNING SHADOWS and THE HANDS OF ORLOC have been released separately. But if they have gone back again to the masters well then indeed it’s looking into. As always the black backround of this site helps to accentuate beautiful and clear images with the covers.
