Promises (1996)
Promises given
And promises broken
Words stain my lips
Just like blood on my handsAnd words are like poison
That sinks down inside you
And some things you do
You just don’t understandI offer no reason
I ask for no pity
I make no excuse
For the way that I amAnd words are like poison
That sinks down inside you
And some things you do
You just don’t understandIf God is my witness
Then God is my savior
But if you are my judge
Then I’m already damnedAnd words are like poison
That sinks down inside you
And some things you do
You just don’t understandAnd would if my fingers
To cut off and give you
Could gain my redemption
I’d cut off my handsBut words are like poison
That bends you and blinds you
And some things you do
You just don’t understandSo this is my story
And I hope that it finds you
For your sweet attention
I cannot demandAnd words are like poison
That lives down inside you
And some things you do
You just don’t understand
Hi! Tony,
I’am not familiar with singer Lyle Lovett, or these lyrics, but the lyrics-most definitely, compliment the screenshot.
Thanks, for sharing!
By the way, I will link this post on Twitter and Tumblr(minus the screenshot, but of course!)
We whom are “thieves” get exactly, what we…deserve.

Yep, I know Lovett well, and his lyrics are a logical continuation of the previous post on Johnny Cash. Lovett acted in Robert Altman’s THE PLAYER, SHORT CUTS and COOKIE’S FORTUNE, and he hit it big with the song “Cowboy Man.”
Reading the lyrics you have posted here, indicate some serious self-reflection, tinged with regret, but these are beautifully written and deeply felt.
